Organized Folder Structure for Video Editing

Organizing your folder structure in either the Finder or Explorer level is just as important as having your project set up correctly for when editing.

Having a well laid out folder structure is key to keeping your footage and assets organized when editing in any video editing application. Although each editing application is unique in how they handle your file management it is important to understand how to best organize your footage for the platform you are using.

This is the folder structure that I use for all my video projects and something that I learned from working as an Assistant Editor in network television before I started editing the shows I used to assist on. Keep in mind that this structure works best with Adobe Premiere Pro or the old FCP 7. I have not fully wrapped my head around how to best do this with applications such as Davinci Resolve but this is at least a great way to stay organized for archiving.

Keeping your files organized will save you in the long run and allow you to quickly access your footage in a way that makes finding specific files very easy to find.

I run through terabytes of data with the projects I work on and often times I have to access projects from years prior.
